If you successfully complete your CBT at the age of 16 You can upgrade to a 50cc limited bike at the age of 17. From 19 you can move to an A1 licence that permits you to ride a 125cc bicycle without plates or L plates and to carry a passenger.

The A2 is the next step. You can either upgrade from an A1 or take a direct-access theory or practical test.

A1 Licence

The open road, the wind in your hair, the excitement of being on a motorcycle. There's nothing quite like it, however before you can enjoy the freedom that it brings, there is a crucial first step to take - obtaining your A1 licence.

The A1 licence is the first step on the bike licensing ladder. It allows you to ride motorcycles and mopeds that are 125cc or larger with the power up to 11kW. The A1 licence is available to anyone who is 17 years old or older. It is a great way to begin your motorbike journey.

For an A1 license you must pass the Compulsory Base Training (CBT) and pass a theory test and an exam that is two-parts. The CBT course is essential for motorcycle training and prepares you for both the theory and the practical test. The official website of the Government lets you book your theory test, and then change or cancel your appointment.

You will require an instructor on motorcycles to accompany you during your A1 practical test. The test will take around 20 minutes, and will consist of two modules. Module 1 is held at the training center and focuses on off-road manoeuvres such as controlled stop, a slalom, and a figure eight. The remainder of the test is conducted on the roads, and will focus on your ability to control a motorbike at speed.

Module 2 will concentrate on riding a motorcycle in traffic and the ability to navigate intersections. You will also be tested on your ability to read road signs, and understand and apply road rules. You will also have to show your ability to ride at a low speed and perform slow-controlled exercises such as turning left, riding up and down hills, and a U-turn.

After you have passed your A1 license, you can upgrade to an A2 licence after passing your CBT Theory, CBT and Practical Tests. You will then be able to operate any A2 category bike, and carry passengers.

A2 Licence

The A2 Licence represents the second step to obtaining a full motorcycle licence. The A2 licence is obtainable at the age of 19 years old with an active CBT course and is a limited version of a full motorcycle licence. It permits riders to ride motorbikes with the maximum power output of 47 BHP although motorcycles that produce more than this limit can be restricted to 94 BHP.

If you choose to go the A2 route, you'll have to be able to pass Module 1 and Module 2 of your motorcycle test. Both tests are conducted on a bike that is eligible for A2 entitlement. Both modules can be booked in the same location as your CBT course and theory test. The A2 route is suited to riders who have completed their CBT course fairly quickly and are ready financially and terms of experience, to upgrade to a bigger motorcycle.

The first module of your A2 motorcycle test is a park-based course where you will be taught how to control your bike with a slow speed, manoeuvring and emergency stops. The next step is the road portion of the test, in which you will have to demonstrate hazard-avoidance and road positioning. You will also have to perform lifesaver checks and keep two seconds of distance from the vehicle ahead of you. There are minor mistakes that you can make up to 10 violations. This can include not using your mirrors and not maintaining an appropriate distance.

After passing both parts of your A2 motorcycle test, you will be able to ride any motorbike that falls into the A2 category. This includes the popular Honda CB500F or Yamaha MT-07 model. These bikes are not particularly powerful but they are able to handle the speed limits, and offer a comfortable and enjoyable ride.

A3 Licence

The A2 Licence is a natural progression from the CBT and lets riders move up to larger bikes with higher power output. It also comes with additional benefits that you don't get from the CBT, such as riding on motorways and carrying passengers. You can move from CBT to A2 by completing additional training and passing the required tests. The A2 license is valid for two years. After that, it can be upgraded to an unrestricted A license.

The first step in obtaining your A2 license is to be able to pass the Compulsory Base Training (CBT) test as well as the Motorcycle Theory Test. After you have completed the requirements, you're ready to take the Module 1 or Module 2 practical test. The module 1 practical exam involves demonstrating your riding skills in a closed-circuit. the module two test involves manoeuvres in an open road.

During the A2 practical test, you will need to be able to demonstrate excellent observation skills and anticipate hazards on the road. You must also be able to use the correct road positioning, and perform controlled manoeuvres. You must be able for example, to execute a U turn and a figure eight. You must also be able to control the bike in slow-speed situations like turning at junctions and responding to traffic signals.

After passing your A2 test you can begin working towards the full A license. You can do this by either taking the direct entry exam or following the progressive access route. To be eligible for the direct entry route you must pass the theory test, and then pass the mod 1 and module 2 practical tests with a bike that has at least 54bhp.

The A1 and A2 licences are different from the rest of the UK's motorbike licences as they are restricted by power-to-weight ratio and not engine cc's. Even bikes with 600cc capacity can be A2 certified if they're fitted with restrictor kits. It's important to know that not all bikes that claim to be A2 compliant are website actually A2 compliant. Do your research prior to buying one.

A4 Licence

The A4 Licence enables motorists to drive vehicles with more than three wheels. This license covers trucks, buses and coaches. It also covers vehicles carrying dangerous products. Drivers must pass a criminal background test to qualify for the licence. The Digital Driving Licence displays important information, including the date of issuance and the classes of vehicles for which the driver is certified to drive.

To get an A1 to A4 licence the driver must attend a driving school or local transportation office. They must also pass a physical examination. The training course lasts for about 5 hours (1 day) and consists of lectures on the rules of driving, defensive driving and related laws.

The driver will receive an "notice of application" that must be displayed in their premises after the application has been approved. They'll be charged a fee that varies according to the value at which they can charge for the premises. After they've paid the cost the driver will be sent their "licence summary" via post. They should keep the other pages of their licence in a secure place, as they may be asked to show them by police or council officers.
